What Is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure which was developed to combat hair shedding. In the micro-pigmentation, a practitioner deposits tiny dots of medical-grade pigment into the upper dermis of the scalp. The aim is replicating the appearance of hair follicles. When scalp micro-pigmentation is done well, the result is the visual impression of a closely shaved head, the look of increased hair density in thinning areas, and a more defined hairline appearance.

SMP procedure does not grow hair but it creates the look of hair. The procedure goes by several names. You may also see it called trichopigmentation, dermopigmentation, hair follicle simulation, hair optical simulation, or simply a hair tattoo. These all refer to the same general technique, though there are variations in depth, pigment type, and equipment between practitioners. Unlike a conventional body tattoo, SMPs target only the papillary dermis (the upper layer of skin) roughly 0.3 to 1.5 mm deep. This shallower placement is intentional. It produces finer dots and avoids the ink migration that causes deep tattoos to blur and spread over time. The tradeoff is that SMP fades faster than a tattoo. Most practitioners frame this as a feature rather than a flaw, since it allows for color correction and natural adjustment as the client ages.

How did scalp micropigmentation begin in Turkey?

Scalp micropigmentation first gained popularity in the U.S. and the U.K. as a cosmetic procedure to address hair loss. Within a very short time, clinics established in Turkey to treat hair loss began offering these treatments.  SMP (scalp micropigmentation) has been a common cosmetic procedure in Turkey for about 10 years. Since then, Istanbul has become a trusted destination for scalp micropigmentation procedures, thanks to its effective hair loss treatments, skilled specialists, and award-winning clinics.

Is SMP effective? How does it work?

Yes, scalp micropigmentation is a safe, effective, and long-lasting hair restoration solution that creates the illusion of a full head of hair and has been proven to work for many individuals. If you are new to hair loss treatments, you might be wondering how scalp micropigmentation works. SMP is essentially a tattoo for your scalp.

This pigmentation technique involves using layered dots and different shades of black to mimic the shadow of hairs. The scalp micropigmentation method requires multiple sessions to achieve the desired look. These multiple pigmentation sessions will ensure the most natural looking results.

A topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure to ensure minimal discomfort.

Do I qualify for hair tattooing?

Anyone who is suffering from baldness, alopecia, or thinned hair can qualify for hair tattooing. SMP can be used to correct a receding hairline, create an illusion of hair in case of balding, or provide a fuller look for people with thinner hair.

However, keep in mind that if you are suffering from scalp acne or other scalp problems you should avoid getting a hair tattoo until the breakout fades. Also, if your skin is prone to keloids, you might not be a good candidate for scalp micropigmentation.

To decide on whether hair tattooing is the right choice for you, take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of the SMP treatment.

Hair tattoo advantages

Various advantages of the hair tattoo procedure include gettin quick results, affordability, the illusion of high hair density, and the ability to create a look of a full head of hair.

SMP treatment can give you the appearance of a full head of short hair look. Since there are no limitations such as the number of healthy hair follicles, even completely bald people can enjoy the look of a stylish buzz cut.

If you are only suffering from thinned hair and don’t want to get a hair transplant, you can achieve a fuller look through scalp micropigmentation.

Hair tattoo disadvantages

Hair tattoo procedure is not a permanent solution like hair transplant. Because the hair tattoo procedure is completed over multiple sessions, it can be time consuming as well. You may need to pay regular visits to your practitioner to get the look you want.

Even though it offers a great alternative to other hair loss solutions, SMP treatment does not actually promote any hair growth.

Hair tattoo can only provide a short hair appearance, that’s why it’s not suitable for people who want to achieve long hair look.

Who Gets the Best Results from Scalp Micropigmentation?

Most people with hair loss are candidates. The factors that make someone a good candidate:

If you have stable hair loss…
If your hairline is still receding or your thinning is still progressing, adding pigment now may create inconsistencies later when surrounding hair continues to thin. A six-month period of stable loss is a reasonable benchmark before proceeding.

If you have realistic expectations…
SMP creates the impression of hair. It does not create hair. Patients who want a shaved-head look or who want to reduce scalp visibility tend to be satisfied. Those expecting the results of a hair transplant from a pigmentation procedure rarely are.

If you have a healthy scalp…
Active skin conditions affecting the scalp, such as psoriasis flare-ups and eczema, can interfere with pigment retention and healing. These conditions must be treated before beginning the hair simulation procedure.

If you have darker skin undertones relative to the pigment…
The higher the contrast between the scalp skin and the simulated follicle dots, the more dramatic the SMP result appears. This is not a disqualifier for lighter-skinned patients, but it does affect the visual impact.

Is a hair tattoo permanent?

As with any tattoo, a hair tattoo provides long-lasting results but it will naturally fade over time. This is why even though scalp micropigmentation is a long-lasting solution, but it is not permanent. Scalp Micropigmentation lasts an average of 4-10 years.

Is it okay to get a hair tattoo after a hair transplant?

Yes, combining hair transplant with hair tattoo is preferred by many patients. A hair tattoo can help cover up any bald patches, or scars from previous hair transplants, or improve the hair density after a hair transplant operation.

Because scalp micropigmentation mimics the shadow of hair, strategically planning where to use hair tattoo and where to use hair transplant can lead to natural looking results.

Does a hair tattoo look real?

The results from scalp micropigmentation can look deceivingly real if it is performed by an expert. The tiny dots created by the special tattooing instruments used for the SMP treatment and the correct use of black hues create the perfect illusion of hair.

Many people state that most of their friends and family are not able to tell that it is tattooing at all.

A Comparison of SMP and Other Hair Loss Solutions

Are SMP and hair tattoos the same thing?

SMP (Scalp Micropigmentation) and hair tattoos refer to the same procedure. However, SMP uses specialized, smaller needles and natural pigments injected shallowly into the scalp to replicate real hair follicles, unlike traditional body tattooing.

Micropigmented Scalp or Transplanted Hair?

Both are very different methods used to hide baldness. While hair transplantation is a medical surgery, micropigmentation of the scalp is a cosmetic procedure.

The combination of hair transplant and SMP combination is increasingly common. A patient gets a transplant to restore volume where possible, then uses SMP to camouflage the FUE extraction sites in the donor area, fill in lower-density zones, and sharpen the hairline. The two procedures are complementary, not mutually exclusive.

SMP vs. Microblading

SMP is typically performed on the scalp, but it is also used on the eyebrows. Microblading, on the other hand, is a technique performed specifically on the eyebrows to make them appear fuller for people with sparse eyebrows. Although it may not produce results as realistic as SMP, microblading can solve your sparse eyebrow problem for up to 1.5 years. SMP provides longer-lasting results and a more natural look, but trying microblading first might be a practical option.

Microblading creates hairlike lines in the brows using a handheld blade tool that drags pigment through shallow cuts in the skin. It is designed to produce the impression of brow hairs.

SMP produces dots, not strokes. The technique is fundamentally different because scalp hair looks different from brow hair. A shaved scalp shows circular follicle openings, not visible hair shafts. Trying to replicate that with microblading strokes produces results that look like drawn-on hairs, not stubble.

Scalp simulation vs hair transplant

Does Scalp Micropigmentation hurt?

Not really, our medical team applies a local anesthetic to numb the scalp before performing scalp micropigmentation, which helps minimize any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

Scalp micropigmentation involves using small needles to deposit pigment into the scalp, which can cause very little discomfort, but most patients find the procedure to be easily tolerable and the benefits outweigh the minimal discomfort.

How long does the hair tattooing procedure take?

Each hair tattooing session can take 3-5 hours because it requires the utmost attention to detail for creating as natural results as possible. The length of the procedure varies depending on the size of the treatment area.

Does hair grow over tattoos?

Yes, hair can grow over tattoos. However, you will need to wait for the healing process to be completed as your body will be working on the damaged tissue before providing hair growth.

Is SMP disallowed in any religion?

Yes, Scalp Micropigmentation is allowed in any religious belief, including Islam. Baldness is interpreted as an aliment and treatment for it is only natural according to many sources including European Council for Fatwa.
